A dishwasher either lets water escape or refuses to release it, and the parts responsible barely overlap. In Toledo's older housing stock there is a third character in the plot: the plumbing the machine connects to, which often predates the machine by fifty years.
Won't drain: work the path
The exit path is short — sump filter, drain hose, then pump. Twist out the filter and rinse it tonight; check the hose behind the machine for kinks; and if the dishwasher shares a disposal, confirm the connection's knockout plug was actually removed at install, the classic post-remodel miss.
Older Toledo kitchens add house-side suspects: a partially clogged branch line or a high loop that sagged over the decades will drain a dishwasher slowly enough to leave standing water. If the sink gurgles when the dishwasher drains, the house is part of the story.
Path clear and still standing water? Drain pump or check valve — a modest visit when it has not been forced for weeks.
Leaks: location is the diagnosis
Front-edge water: door gasket, latch alignment, or detergent oversudsing. Underneath: supply fitting, pump seal, cracked float housing. On basement-adjacent installs, look with a flashlight where the drain line drops — a pinhole there can masquerade as a machine leak for months.
Hardened gaskets are the age tell: rubber that has done fifteen Lake Erie winters splits at the corners first.
The visit itself
A tech runs a test cycle and watches the machine fill, wash, and drain, then quotes from behavior, not the complaint's name. Pumps, valves, gaskets, and hoses are stocked parts — leak and drain calls mostly close in one trip.
Keep it boring afterward
Monthly filter rinse, quarterly hot cycle with cleaner, and a yearly glance at the supply and drain connections. Ten minutes a season, and this page goes back on the shelf.
Book it with the details
Say which problem — escaping water or trapped water — plus the model tag, the disposal connection if any, and whether the sink complains when the machine drains. That last detail flags the house-side cases before the truck rolls.
If the machine has real age on it, ask for the gasket-and-clamp once-over while the panel is off; the part that has not failed yet is always the cheaper one.
